Laptop Requirement for Course - Class participants must choose one of the following three options:

1. Bring a laptop to the class with a working copy of ACL already installed. Please be sure to test your ACL software when you are not connected to your office network. A public wireless Internet connection is available in the training room.

2. Bring a laptop to class without a working copy of ACL. You will need to “borrow” the use of the ACL software from the instructor. You will receive a copy of the ACL software for you to install before the class. There is an extra fee of $25 for this option. This fee helps cover the cost of distributing the software.

3. Rent an ACL-equipped laptop from the instructor for use during the class. There is a limited number of these laptops available so please reserve it early. There is an extra fee for this option as follows:

  • $100 for the 3-day “Introduction to ACL” class held July 19-21; or,
  • $150 for both classes ("Introduction to ACL" on 07/19 - 07/21 and "Scripts & Functions" on 07/22 - 7/23).

    When Registering: If you aren't providing your own laptop and ACL software, please designate in the Comments field on the online registration form which option you will use for this class. If you are opting for #2 or #3, someone will contact you prior to the class date to make arrangements.

    Course Prerequisites: Participants should have basic computer skills, including at least some experience using applications operating within the Microsoft Windows operating system.

    Who Should Attend: IS/IT Auditors, Financial and Operational Auditors, Internal/External Auditors, Analysts, Accounting Professionals, Investigators, or anyone interested in learning to use the ACL for Windows software system.

    Course Description:

    This is the class for you if you are new to ACL or have used it to some extent but want to learn much more! The objective of this 3-day, interactive “hands-on” course is to acquaint the participant with the primary features, commands, and functions of the ACL software system. This includes: creating and working with ACL projects & views, data access and import methods, basic commands, graphing, reporting, record filtering, computed fields, expression building, and output generation.

    Course Objectives:

    At the conclusion of this course, each participant will be able to:
  • Understand the role data analysis software plays in supporting audit activities.
  • Understand and recognize data analysis terminology, as well as common data types, data structures, and character sets.
  • Create and manage ACL Projects and Project components.
  • Navigate within the ACL software system in order to utilize ACL commands, functions and other software features.
  • Utilize ACL commands and functions in order to successfully perform data analysis operations on various types of data files.
  • Utilize the reporting and other output features of ACL to generate meaningful reports, charts, graphs, and/or output files.
  • Utilize the ACL commands necessary to simultaneously work with multiple data files.
  • Create and utilize ACL scripts in order automate various data analysis routines.

  • Understanding common data types and data structures
  • Obtaining your data

    B. Understanding the ACL for Windows Environment

  • Navigating within ACL / The ACL Main Menu structure
  • Creating and working with ACL projects
  • Creating and managing ACL Views
  • Working with the Overview

    C. Accessing Data

  • Data paths and data downloading
  • Defining data files
  • Accessing / downloading ODBC-compliant data

    D. Analyzing and Understanding Your Data

  • Using the Verify, Count, Total, and Statistics commands
  • Using the Sequence, Duplicates, Stratify, Classify, & Age commands
  • Graphing and reporting within ACL

    Days Two and Three

    D. Analyzing and Understanding Your Data (cont.)

  • Filtering records
  • Building expressions using the ACL Expression Builder feature

    E. Manipulating and Managing Data

  • Using the Extract, Export, Sort, Join, Merge, Summarize, and Sample commands
  • Working with ACL Functions.

    Marc Garcia has over 19 years of audit, data analysis, and ACL experience. He has nine years of experience in presenting various levels of ACL training classes. He is a graduate of Texas State University with a degree in Computer Information Systems.

Courses are occasionally canceled or rescheduled due to low enrollment. We determine whether a course has enough participants approximately 16 days prior to the course date. If we cancel or reschedule, we will email the participant no later than 14 days before the original class date. Solutions Training will not pay for cancellation/change fees associated with travel and hotel arrangement changes.
